Malin Hammarström, branch manager at CERTEGO in Västerås, is actively working to increase gender equality in the security industry.
As branch manager at CERTEGO in Västerås, Malin Hammarström clearly sees that the security industry is still dominated by men, especially in technical roles. Leading in such an environment presents both challenges and opportunities, but Malin believes it is crucial to work actively with inclusive and equal leadership to create a healthy workplace.
"The biggest challenge is probably the prejudices that exist about the industry – that it's a tough, male-dominated environment with sexism and harassment. But that's not the reality I experience, and it's incredibly important to bring more women into the industry. We also see that men appreciate having a workforce with diverse ages, ethnicities, and genders," says Malin.
CERTEGO is working purposefully across the Nordics to promote gender equality, and for Malin and the branch in Västerås, it's about creating a work culture where everyone feels seen and inspired to grow. "It's not just about making everyone feel welcome, but about giving each employee the right conditions to contribute and develop – both in their work and on a personal level," she explains.
Malin reflects on how much has changed since she started her career. "In the beginning, I was often the only woman at several workplaces," she says. "There were a lot of sexist jokes and attitudes that you had to learn to handle. Fortunately, that has changed, and at CERTEGO, I don't experience that kind of jargon anymore."
Changing the perception of the industry and attracting more women is a long process, and Malin sees the company's marketing as a key to success. "We need to continue highlighting that the security industry is open to everyone, regardless of gender. We've also visited high schools, where we've met many girls who seem curious about the profession. One of them applied for an internship with us and now actually works in our shop and workshop as needed. We've also hired a project manager and a security technician, both women – and we hope to hire many more."
For Malin, an inclusive workplace is not just an ethical matter, but also a prerequisite for the company’s long-term success. By working with gender equality and creating a corporate culture where everyone takes responsibility for their own development, CERTEGO is building a stronger and more sustainable business. "We have a fantastic sense of cohesion here in Västerås, and that's crucial for us to keep growing," says Malin.
She also emphasizes the importance of building strong and cohesive teams, something that boosts job satisfaction and leads to success. With a continued focus on gender equality and a culture that encourages diversity and inclusion, Malin is confident that CERTEGO is on the right path. "We're not there yet, but we've come a long way," she concludes.
Thank you, Malin Hammarström, for your fantastic work in Västerås!
