Since 2020, we at CERTEGO have annually recognized Orange Day, which takes place today, November 25. On this day, the UN encourages the world to take a stand against violence towards women. The color orange, symbolizing hope and a future free from violence, illuminates buildings worldwide today and is worn by people to show their support.
You can make a difference too! Support the fight globally by donating to organizations working against violence, and locally by daring to see and act when you notice signs of violence or vulnerability around you. Together, we can create a safer future.
Daring to recognize and act on signs of violence or vulnerability can make a significant difference. As a colleague or friend, it is important to be attentive to signals and provide support. Here are some tips on how you can act:
1. Show care: Approach the person privately and with empathy. Ask open-ended questions like "How are you feeling?" or "I've noticed you seem down, is there anything I can do to help?"
2. Listen and believe their story: If someone shares their situation, listen without judgment and confirm that you believe them. Feeling heard and believed can be crucial for someone who is vulnerable.
3. Provide information about support: Share resources that are available, such as national helplines, support organizations, or your company’s HR department, which can guide them to appropriate help.
4. Act discreetly: It’s important to respect the person’s privacy and not share information without their consent. Encourage them to seek help but do not force decisions.
5. Report in case of immediate danger: If you suspect someone is in immediate danger, do not hesitate to contact the police or social services for assistance.
Your attention and care can be the first step toward change and safety for someone in need. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels safe and heard.
